Seeking a common way

Opening
Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labour in vain.
Unless the Lord guards the city,
the guard keeps watch in vain.

Psalm
Jubilate, everybody,
serve the Lord in all your ways, and
come before his presence singing:
enter now his courts with praise.
For the Lord our God is gracious,
and his mercy everlasting.
Jubilate, jubilate, jubilate Deo!        F Dunn

Prayer
Gathered from diverse traditions,
our first act is to acknowledge with adoration
that Christ has made known to us your wisdom, O Lord.
If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.

Gathered here we recognise our common calling
to glorify you, our God, through Christ.
If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.

Aware of the challenge of the tasks before us
and recognising that diversity makes unity more difficult to articulate
we seek your promised guidance, Lord God.
If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.

Conscious of our common faith in Christ
and eager to respond faithfully to his prayer for unity for your church
we commit ourselves to this endeavour.
If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.

Give us determination, vision, creativity
and a deep desire to discern your leading us
together in your purposes in this land in this time.
May we know your blessing upon us now
even as we bring to you in prayer places and people
facing injustice, disunity, violence and death.
Continue with us through these hours:
be in our heads and our understanding,
in our mouths and our speaking,
in our ears and our listening,
in our hearts and our trusting.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
